Works Department

The Department of Works of the Municipal Assembly is a composite department formed from the Public Works Department, the Department of Feeder Roads, the Municipal Water and Sanitation Unit, the Department of Rural Housing, and the Works Unit of the Assembly. The Department is responsible for planning, coordination, and supervision of public infrastructure and engineering services within the Municipality.

Core Mandate and Functions

The Department performs the following key functions:

  1. Assists the Assembly in formulating policies on works in line with national policies and standards.
  2.  Establishes and specifies programmes of action necessary for the implementation of approved physical development plans.
  3. Facilitates the implementation of works related policies and submits periodic reports to the Assembly.
  4.  Advises the Assembly on all matters relating to works and infrastructure development in the Municipality.
  5. Prepares and supports the development of tender documents for civil works projects executed through contracts or community initiated projects.
  6. Facilitates the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of public roads, including feeder roads and drainage systems in major settlements.
  7. Provides technical advice on the construction, repair, maintenance, diversion, or alteration of streets and roads.
    • Promotes and facilitates the routine maintenance of public buildings and facilities within the Municipality.
  8. Assists in the construction, equipping, closure, and maintenance of markets, and ensures that trading activities are confined to approved market spaces.
  9. Supports the pegging and demarcation of physical developments for major settlements based on approved layouts.
  10. Facilitates the provision of adequate, safe, and wholesome potable water supply across the Municipality.
  11. Inspects projects undertaken by the Municipal Assembly in collaboration with relevant departments.
  12. Advises the Assembly on the regulation and prohibition of borrow pits, excavations, and the sinking or closure of wells.
    • Maintains public buildings including offices, residential accommodation, and ancillary structures.
  13. Provides technical and engineering support for all works undertaken by the Assembly.
  14. Facilitates the registration, updating, and maintenance of data on public buildings and infrastructure.
  15. In collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana, facilitates the provision and maintenance of street lighting.
  16. Advises and encourages property owners to remove or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges that obstruct traffic, utilities, or public works; remove dilapidated structures and fences in public spaces; maintain the exterior appearance of buildings; tidy premises; and remove derelict vehicles or objects that constitute public nuisance.
  17. Ensures the protection of, and unobstructed access to, fire hydrants within the Municipality.
  18. Provides technical advice on machinery installation and structural building layouts to support fire safety, rescue operations, and effective fire management.
