Head of NADMO
The Disaster Management and Prevention Department is responsible for coordinating measures aimed at preventing, reducing, and managing the impact of disasters within the Municipality. The Department operates in line with national disaster management policies and works closely with relevant agencies, communities, and stakeholders to enhance preparedness, response, and recovery.
The Department performs the following key functions:
Assists in the planning and implementation of programmes to prevent, reduce, and mitigate disasters within the Municipality in accordance with national policies.
Facilitates the organization of public disaster education and awareness campaigns to highlight disaster hazards and promote the role of individuals and communities in disaster prevention.
Assists and facilitates the education and training of volunteers to combat fires, including bush fires, and to manage the effects of natural and man made disasters.
Prepares and periodically reviews municipal disaster prevention and management plans to address disasters arising from floods, bush fires, human settlement fires, outbreaks of communicable diseases, earthquakes, and other natural hazards.
Facilitates the organization of annual disaster management simulations and exercises to improve preparedness and response capacity.
Ensures compliance with safety rules and regulations relating to both public and private properties to guarantee adequate protection against disasters.
Facilitates the provision of emergency shelters, relief services, and essential support in the event of disasters.
In consultation and collaboration with relevant agencies, identifies disaster prone zones, educates communities within such areas, and prevents development activities that may increase disaster risks.
Participates in post disaster assessments to determine the extent of damage, losses, and the immediate and long term needs of affected areas.
Coordinates the receipt, management, and supervised distribution of relief items within the Municipality.
Investigates disaster reports and analyzes hazard patterns, vulnerability levels, and risk situations to inform preventive strategies.
Facilitates the collection, collation, and preservation of data and records on disasters occurring within the Municipality.
Inspects facilities and provides technical advice on the installation and proper use of fire extinguishers and other safety equipment.
Coordinates the formation and operation of Fire Volunteer Squads at the community level to strengthen local response capacity.
Assists and facilitates rescue and evacuation services for persons trapped by fire and other emergency situations.
